Special initiative for the elderly in the Netherlands: now smart gadgets will take care of senior citizens, 'smart floor' will save from falling
The Netherlands spends the most in the world in terms of caring for the elderly. In 2019, the Netherlands spent 4% of its GDP and Denmark spent 3.5% on elderly care. This expenditure could double by 2050.
The government of the Netherlands is adopting the Artificial Intelligence (AI) model to cut expenditure. Netherlands Sports Minister Connie Helder says the elderly will now have to rely on themselves to take care of themselves.
Gadgets like 'smart floor' will prevent falls
For this, he suggested using belts fitted with airbags and gadgets like 'smart floor'. Through this it can be known that the person is about to fall on the ground. In this case, the risk of hip fracture is reduced by up to 70%.
Apart from this, things like training the elderly who have been discharged from the hospital in Denmark to resume their daily work are also included. This includes having video calls with nurses. So that in case of any emergency, the elderly themselves will be able to seek medical advice. This can reduce the number of care workers by 40%.
Along with the elderly, the age of the caretakers is also increasing.
In the Netherlands, the number of people aged 75 years or older will double to 2.5 million by 2040. David Grabowski of Harvard Medical School says that not only has the number of elderly people increased, but the people who take care of them are also getting old themselves.
